Bobcat sighted, photographed in Whitefish Bay backyard

A bobcat was seen in the backyard of a Whitefish Bay home, according to a police department report.

A resident who lives in the 6100 block of North Lake Drive Court captured several photos of a wild cat in her backyard Friday morning, police said.

Dianne Robinson, the area wildlife biologist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, confirmed the animal was a bobcat.

The Wisconsin DNR said the bobcat does not pose a risk for adults and children, but pets should not be left unattended.

Bobcats are reclusive and very wary of humans and will actively avoid them, the DNR said. Bobcats behave in much the same manner as coyotes and will usually run away in response to noise. Bobcats tend to weigh 20 to 40 pounds, the DNR said.

Residents who see a bobcat are asked to call the village’s police department non-emergency number at 414351-9900.
