Sendik’s to expand at The Corners

- Tom Daykin

Sendik’s plans to expand its supermarket at The Corners mixed-use development in the Town of Brookfield, a $5 million project that will provide more prepared foods and other amenities.

The expanded store will be blended into the main shopping level at The Corners, while adding a mezzanine lounge and in-store dining and bar offerings.

Sendik’s debuted its store at The Corners when the retail and apartment development opened last year. The store is located on the lower level, and currently doesn’t have space at the street level.

Renovations will begin in January, and the store will remain open during construction. That work will be done by summer at The Corners, which is east of Barker Road between West Blue Mound Road and I-94.

The grocery store will grow from 35,000 square feet to 40,000 square feet.

Additions will include space on the main Union Street level, next to L.L.Bean, that will house a floral shop, home goods department and expanded grab-and-go foods.

Other features will include:

❚ A mezzanine lounge featuring a gathering space with sofas, tables, gas fireplace and piano that overlooks the newly designed store.

❚ A lower level bar offering beer, wine and gourmet coffee.

❚ A grill station where customers can have fresh meats and fish cooked to order to eat at home or at the instore bar or lounge.

❚ Direct pedestrian access between Union Street and Blue Mound Road through a new indoor walkway.

Those improvements will capitalize

on the store’s success and the growing popularity of The Corners, said Ted Balistreri, Sendik’s co-owner.

Also, the Sendik’s expansion will complement $7 million of street upgrades and other common area improvements that IM Properties, which operates The Corners, unveiled in July, said Robert Gould, head of U.S. operations for IM.

“That’s a win-win for both of us,” Gould said.

The Corners is anchored by a Von Maur department store and features dozens of additional stores and restaurants, along with 235 apartments.

Silverspot Cinema is under construction and opens next spring, and Lake Country Social, a large restaurant with a rooftop lounge, is to begin construction in January with a summer opening.
