Why fans boycotted an Ariana Grande song

- Rasha Ali

All we want in life is someone to be as loyal to us as Ariana Grande’s fans are to her — even if they have an odd way of showing it.

They’ve started a movement to boycott her song “7 Rings” and even created a Twitter hashtag #BOYCOTT7RINGS.

That seems counterintuitive, but it turns out they’re snubbing the song in an attempt to send the third single from her “Thank U, Next” album to the No. 1 spot on the music charts.

Both the title track “Thank U, Next” and “7 Rings” have accomplished that feat and now her fans have decided it’s time to bump them out of the way to make room for “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored.”

Grande caught on to the trending hashtag and said “nothing’s funnier than ‘boycott 7 rings’.”

When a fan asked her to tweet the hashtag to show solidarity, Grande’s reply showed more concern than support.

“R u ok?” the singer inquired. Whether she’s joining the campaign or letting her single hit No. 1 organically, Grande made it clear she appreciates her fans. “i love u,” she replied to the fan who asked her to join the boycott by tweeting the hashtag.

The 25-year-old released “Thank U, Next,” the 12-track album on Feb. 8, just a few months after the Sept. 7, 2018, death of ex-boyfriend Mac Miller and the end of her engagement to “Saturday Night Live” star Pete Davidson in October.
