Hauser brothers no longer plan to transfer to Wisconsin

MADISON – Although former Marquette standouts Sam and Joey Hauser have yet to formally announce their transfer plans, sources now indicate they no longer are expected to join the Wisconsin men’s basketball program.

Several sources with knowledge of the recruitment process told the Journal Sentinel last month and again last week the brothers were planning to transfer to UW.

Two sources told the Journal Sentinel the brothers informed the UW staff of that decision.

UW coach Greg Gard and his assistants cannot comment on unsigned recruits.

A source told the Journal Sentinel on Saturday that Sam is expected to choose Virginia, with Joey set on Michigan State.

“I know it was a really, really tough decision for both of them,” the source said. “They agonized over it. Ultimately, the family decided that this was their best decision.”

Sam played three seasons at Marquette and has one season of eligibility remaining. Joey made his debut last season after redshirting in 2017-’18 while recovering from an ankle injury. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining, though he could decide to appeal to regain the season he lost because of injury.

Sam, 6-foot-8 and 225 pounds, averaged 14.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game last season and was a secondteam all-Big East pick. He shot 40.2% from three-point range and hit 92.4% of his free throws. He shot a combined 44.5 percent from three-point range and had more than double the number of assists (224) than turnovers (110) in three seasons with the Golden Eagles.

Joey, 6-9 and 230, averaged 9.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season. He shot 42.5% from threepoint range and hit 79.1% of his free throws. He was named to the Big East all-freshman team after being named the league’s freshman of the week five times.

The duo combined for 28 points, on 10-for-19 shooting, in Marquette’s 74-69 overtime victory over UW last season.

“They were very conflicted,” the source said Saturday. “Greg and Wisconsin did a great job recruiting them and I think ultimately it was out of their hands.”
