Arlington National Cemetery’s Notable Graves, tinyurl.com/y6nrb572, takes a peek into the lives of a few of the 400,000 servicemen and women who rest peacefully there. In Explorers, read a biography of Robert Peary, the first man to reach the North Pole. Learn about Joe Louis, the world champion heavyweight boxer who went on to serve in World War II alongside Jackie Robinson, Major League Baseball’s first African American player, in Prominent Military Figures. In Presidents, you’ll recognize many names from history books, including John

F. Kennedy and his brothers.

In Sports, who is said to be credited with inventing the game of baseball?

Dear Amy: Do you have ideas about how we could celebrate Memorial Day as a family?

Dear Jackson: There are many ways to commemorate Memorial Day with your family. The web is full of patriotic activities you can participate in to celebrate the day.

One idea is to fly a flag at home to help remind others about the spirit of the day. You can also put together “care packages” for soldiers. If you know anyone who is in the military, you can contact them, find out what their needs are and collect those items with your family and friends.

If you are unsure where to begin, you can participate through such organizations as Operation Gratitude, operationgratitude.com, or A Million Thanks, amillionthanks.org.

Another thoughtful family activity would be visiting a nearby veterans memorial or cemetery, bringing flowers to decorate the graves, attending a Memorial Day service or parade, or inviting a military family over for a meal, especially if you live near a base.
