Gooden faces drug charges

Former National League Cy Young award winner Dwight Gooden is facing drug charges in New Jersey.

A criminal complaint says that on June 7 two plastic baggies allegedly containing cocaine were found in 54-year-old Gooden’s car during a traffic stop in Holmdel, New Jersey.

The former New York Mets and New York Yankees pitcher has been charged with cocaine possession, possession of drug parapherna­lia and being under the influence of drugs.

He is scheduled to make an initial court appearance on July 23.

Gooden won the Cy Young with the Mets in 1985 and was a member of the Mets’ 1986 World Series championsh­ip team.

He was suspended from baseball for part of the 1994 season and all of the 1995 season after testing positive for cocaine.

TRACK AND FIELD

Sifan Hassan broke the long-standing women’s mile record in 4 minutes 12.33 seconds at the Herculis Diamond League meeting on Friday in Monaco.

The Dutchwoman fractional­ly beat the 4:12.56 set in 1996 by Svetlana Masterkova, a two-time Olympic champion that year in Atlanta.

Hassan knocked two seconds off her personal best and finished five seconds clear of Britain’s Laura Weightman.

CYCLING

Dylan Groenewege­n won the longest stage of the Tour de France in a sprint as Giulio Ciccone kept the yellow jersey.

The Dutch sprinter edged Australian rival Caleb Ewan and two-time world champion Peter Sagan of Slovakia to claim his fourth career stage win of the Tour.

Squeezed between the crossing of the Vosges and Massif Central mountains, the 142.9-mile trek took the peloton from Belfort to Chalon-sur-Saone in central-east France.

A Tour rookie, Ciccone seized the yellow jersey on Thursday following a long breakaway during the race’s first mountain stage.

NFL

New York Jets second-year tight end Chris Herndon was suspended without pay by the NFL for the first four regular-season games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Herndon pleaded guilty in January to driving while intoxicate­d in New Jersey in June 2018. The incident occurred about a month after he was selected by the Jets in the fourth round of the NFL draft out of Miami.

New Jersey State Police said Herndon was driving his Nissan Armada when he crashed into a Toyota Land Cruiser that was towing a trailer carrying another vehicle. The 76-year-old driver was not injured.

Incognito suspended: Oakland Raiders guard Richie Incognito was suspended without pay by the NFL for the first two games of the regular season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Incognito pleaded guilty in April to disorderly conduct in Scottsdale, Arizona, after being accused of threatenin­g employees at a funeral home where his father’s body was being held.

The Raiders signed Incognito in May. He sat out last season in retirement.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Coach Dennis Felton was fired by Cleveland State after just two seasons.

Felton, who replaced Gary Waters in 2017, went 22-44 in his two seasons. The 56-year-old previously coached at Western Kentucky and Georgia.

The Vikings went just 5-13 in the Horizon League last season.
