Milwaukee native Rachel Brosnahan picked up her second straight Emmy nomination for her performance as the title character on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

The nominations for the 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced Tuesday.

Brosnahan, who was born in Milwaukee and grew up in the Chicago area, took home the Emmy last year. She also won the equivalent honor at the past two Golden Globe Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards earlier this year.

Tony Shalhoub, the Green Bay native who plays Brosnahan’s father on the Amazon Prime series, was nominated again this year for best supporting actor in a comedy series. (He lost in the category last year to honorary Milwaukeean and forever-Fonzie Henry Winkler, who won for the HBO series “Barry.”)

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” also nominated for best comedy series, had the second-most nominations of any show: 20. Leading the pack, by more than a dragon’s length: HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” which had a recordbreaking 32 nominations.

Other Emmy nominees with Wisconsin ties included:

❚ Bradley Whitford, the Madison native who won Emmys for his performances on “The West Wing” and “Transparent,” was nominated for best guest actor in a drama series for Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

❚ Filmmaker Chris Smith, who studied film at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, was nominated for best directing for a documentary/nonfiction program for the Netflix documentary Rachel Brosnahan, shown accepting her second Golden Globe award earlier this year, is nominated again for an Emmy for best actress in a comedy series for her performance on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” She won the Emmy in the category last year.

“FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened.” He’s also nominated as the documentary’s producer for outstanding documentary or nonfiction special.

❚ “The Act,” the Hulu miniseries based on a true-crime story that had its denouement in Waukesha County, is up for two Emmys: best actress in a limited series or movie for Joey King, who played Gypsy Rose Blanchard; and best supporting actress in a limited series or movie for Patricia Arquette, who played her controlling mother, Dee Dee Blanchard.

Other top nominees included the nuclear disaster miniseries “Chernobyl,” with 19 nominations; “Saturday Night Live,” with 18; and “When They See Us,” the miniseries that dramatized the Central Park Five case and its aftermath, with 16 nominations.

In addition to “Mrs. Maisel,” shows up for the best comedy series Emmy are “Barry,” “Fleabag,” “The Good Place,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Russian Doll,” “Schitt’s Creek” and “Veep.”

Competing with “Game of Thrones’ “final season for the best drama series Emmy are “Better Call Saul,” “Bodyguard,” “Killing Eve,” “Ozark,” “Pose,” “Succession” and “This Is Us.”

Brosnahan’s toughest competition for best actress in a comedy series likely is Julia Louis-Dreyfus, nominated for her performance on “Veep’s” final season. Louis-Dreyfus shares with Cloris Leachman the record for most Emmys won by a performer — eight.

Other contenders in the category are Christina Applegate, for “Dead to Me”; Phoebe Waller-Bridge, for “Fleabag”; Natasha Lyonne, for “Russian Doll”; and Catherine O’Hara, for “Schitt’s Creek.”
