4-story extended-stay hotel by Hilton might come to Mequon

- Jeff Rumage

A four-story hotel could be coming to the north side of Port Washington Road in Mequon.

A developer plans to meet with city officials Monday to discuss the possibility of a 91-unit Home2 Suites by Hilton hotel on a vacant 4.8-acre lot at 11900 N. Port Washington Road, just north of Marcus North Shore Cinema.

Home2 Suites by Hilton primarily caters to extended-stay guests staying five or more nights, according to the company website. Home2 Suites by Hilton hotels have also been built in Brookfield, Menomonee Falls and Milwaukee.

If approved by city officials, this would be Mequon’s largest hotel. The city’s other hotels include Baymont by Wyndham, 10330 N Port Washington Road; Chalet Motel, 10401 N. Port Washington Road; and Sybaris Pool and Suites, 10240 Cedarburg Road.

The hotel building would be positioned on the north end of the 4.8-acre site, perpendicular to Port Washington Road, according to a concept plan submitted to the city.

Depending on the final design of the hotel, the developer has indicated to city officials there may be additional room on the south end of the site for a small office building or a sit-down restaurant. No tenants for that building have been secured at this time.

Jac Zader, the city’s assistant director of community development, wrote in a memo to the city’s plan commission that, while the hotel is removed from a residential area, the four-story height of the building may be out of scale with the surrounding one- and two-story commercial buildings.

Zader noted that there are other large buildings in the area, such as Marcus North Shore Cinema and Metro Market, but those buildings are positioned farther back from the roadway than the proposed hotel.

To develop the hotel, city officials would have to rezone the land from institutional to community commercial.

Mequon city officials rezoned the site from office use to institutional use in 2014 for a 72-bed memory care facility. The owner of the property no longer plans to pursue the memory care facility.

The Mequon Plan Commission is expected to discuss the project Monday. Prominence Hospitality Group is not asking for any city approvals at this point; the developer is only asking for the council’s feedback on the proposal.
