Bernal wins Tour de France
Egan Bernal became the first Colombian to win the Tour de France as the three-week race ended with the 21st and final stage on the Champs-Elysees.
At 22, Bernal is the youngest Tour winner in the post-World War II era.
Bernal succeeded Ineos teammate Geraint Thomas as the British outfit posted a seventh Tour victory with a fourth different rider in eight years.
Thomas, a 33-year-old from Wales, had to settle for second place this year. Dutch rider Steven Kruijswijk completed the podium Sunday.
TRACK AND FIELD
Dalilah Muhammad broke a 16-year-old world record in the 400-meter hurdles by finishing in 52.20 seconds on a drizzly night at the U.S. championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
With puddles on the track Sunday, the reigning Olympic champion eclipsed the mark of 52.34 set by Yuliya Pechonkina of Russia on Aug. 8, 2003.
Muhammad’s previous best time was 52.64 in 2017.
Teenager Sydney McLaughlin was second and Ashley Spencer wound up third to also earn spots to the world championships in Doha.
SWIMMING
Caeleb Dressel won his record eighth medal at the world championships in Gwangju, South Korea, helping the U.S. to silver in the 400-meter medley relay after anchor Nathan Adrian got overtaken for gold in the closing meters.
Dressel hauled the U.S. from fourth to first on his butterfly leg with a split of 49.28 seconds. Adrian found himself in a three-way fight with Britain and Russia coming down the stretch.
Brit Duncan Scott surged ahead approaching the wall and got there first with a split of 46.14 to Adrian’s 47.60.
Simone Manuel completed a sweep of the 50 and 100-meter freestyles, the first American woman to achieve the feat.
BASEBALL
All-star pitcher Marcus Stroman was acquired by his hometown Mets from the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday for a pair of minor league prospects, a trade that makes it likely New York will deal away one of its current starters by Wednesday’s deadline.
A 28-year-old right-hander who made his first all-star team this season, Stroman is 6-11 in 21 starts despite a 2.96 ERA that is fifth-best in the AL.
Toronto received two of New York’s top pitching prospects in 24-year-old left-hander Anthony Kay and 18-year-old righty Simeon Woods Richardson. The Mets get $1.5 million from the Blue Jays to offset much of the $2,506,452 remaining on Stroman’s $7.4 million salary this year.
Hot under the collar: In a startling scene, Cleveland Indians pitcher Trevor Bauer suddenly heaved the ball from just past the mound over the center field wall while being taken out of the game against Kansas City.
“I’m an intense competitor and that fire is what drives me,” Bauer said. “I just wanted to say I’m sorry for how I behaved. It won’t happen again.”
Bauer said he spoke to his teammates, but wasn’t sure how they would take his apology.
Sabathia sidelined: New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia is back on the injured list because of right knee inflammation.
The 39-year-old left-hander also was on the IL because of knee inflammation from May 23 to June 2.
Sogard traded: The Toronto Blue Jays traded veteran utilityman Eric Sogard across the diamond, sending him to the visiting Tampa Bay Rays.
Toronto is expected to receive a minor leaguer for the 33-year-old former Milwaukee Brewer, who is batting .300 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI in 73 games.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
Reigning featherweight champ Max Holloway defended his belt late Saturday in Edmonton, Alberta, overwhelming former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar at UFC 240.
Holloway (21-4-0) won a unanimous five-round decision.
In the other headline bout, Brazilian MMA legend Cris Cyborg pummeled Montreal’s Felicia Spencer with punches, leg kicks and knee shots to win a unanimous decision.
