Good City goes low alcohol with new IPA and lager

- Kathy Flanigan

Good City Brewing will add two more beers to the regular lineup soon.

First up: Spare Time Hazy IPA will join the rotation on July 29.

The citrus-forward India Pale Ale has an ABV (alcohol by volume) of 5.6%, making it one of the lowest ABV IPAs in the Good City portfolio. It’s meant to appeal to everyone but with an aim toward those interested in fitness and health, said co-founder David Dupee.

Dupee said the beer got the name Spare Time because it’s “an easy drinking beer associated with rest and relaxation.”

Good City beers are available at two locations: 2108 N. Farwell Ave., and the Deer District, 333 W. Juneau Ave.

Spare Time meets the current trend among drinkers toward lower alcohol in brews and seltzers. On Sept. 30, Good City plans to release another lower-alcohol beer, in cans: Home Lager, a light lager that comes in at 4.5% ABV.

“We were going for something super easy to drink,” said co-founder and brewer Andy Jones. “We wanted to take what big brewers have done and make it better.”

Home Lager is brewed with Colorado barley and Wakadu hops from New Zealand. The specialty hops add lime peel character to the lager taste.

“We think it really represents Milwaukee by bridging the past, present and future,” Dupee said.

Producing a light lager made sense because lagers are some of the top sellers at the location across from the Fiserv Forum, he said.

Good City also recently introduced a passion fruit gose as the third beer in its Scarcity series. Gose beers are a traditional German sour beer and usually feature a hint of salt.

Passion Fruit Gose, which is made with lactic acid bacteria and a passion fruit puree, has a smooth taste with a hint of sour and a touch of salt that barely touches the tongue when you drink it. It will be available in cans in the two taprooms and will sell for $11.99 for a four-pack. The ABV is 5.4%.

It follows a triple IPA and a hazy IPA in the Scarcity series.

Stay patient, those who prefer a heftier beer. If you didn’t get a 16-ounce bottle of Good City’s recently released Wheat Wine Ale, an American-style wheat ale considered part of the strong ale family, it will come back a little differently in the future. Some of the beer, which started with a 9.5% ABV, will be poured into cognac barrels and aged for later release.
