Man, 19, killed when reckless driver being pursued by police hits his car

A 19-year-old Milwaukee man was killed early Thursday morning when a driver being pursued by police ran a flashing red light and struck his vehicle.

The driver who was being pursued, also a 19-year-old man, was injured. He was taken into custody and was being treated at a hospital, Milwaukee police said in a news release.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office said Lequon McCoy of Milwaukee died in the crash, which occurred just after 1 a.m. at North 12th and West Locust streets.

Officers were pursuing a reckless stolen vehicle in the area of North 64th and Congress streets. The driver disregarde­d multiple stoplights and stops signs and nearly caused a crash on West Capitol Drive, police said.

The stolen auto was heading south on North 12th when the driver ignored a flashing red light, striking McCoy's vehicle as it traveled eastbound on West Locust through a flashing yellow light, police said.

The fatal crash involving a police pursuit Thursday morning follows one Tuesday night that injured six people, including a Milwaukee police officer.

In the Tuesday crash, the officer was seriously injured when he was struck by a squad car after he got out of his vehicle and was attempting to arrest a fleeing driver who crashed during a police chase on the north side.

Two boys, ages 7 and 9, were among five others injured in a chain-reaction crash caused by the fleeing driver in the 3500 block of North 16th Street. The boys, who suffered minor injuries, were on the sidewalk and were struck by a parked car that had been pushed into their path after it was struck by a vehicle hit by the fleeing driver.

The fleeing driver, a 28-year-old man, and a 30-year-old woman who was with him were arrested. Both suffered minor injuries in the crash.

A 40-year-old man who was driving the car that was struck by the fleeing driver suffered minor injuries.
