“The Farewell”: Nora Lum (a.k.a. Awkwafina) plays a woman who reluctantly goes along with a plan by her Chinese American family to keep the family matriarch’s cancer diagnosis from her when they travel to visit her in China. Lulu Wang’s semi-autobiographical comedy-drama was one of the breakout movies at this year’s Sundance Film Festival; it’s one of the biggest indie-movie hits of the summer, and so far has a 100% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie finally makes its way to Milwaukee theaters, including the Oriental Theatre and Marcus Theatres’ Majestic Cinema, this Friday.
“Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw”: Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their over-thetop characters from the last few “Fast & Furious” movies, reluctantly joining forces to stop a supersoldier played by Idris Elba from getting a virus that could wipe out millions. Director David Leitch, the former stunt double who already has an impressive collection of directorial credits (“Atomic Blonde,” “Deadpool 2”), grew up in the Kohler area.

“Marianne & Leonard: Word of Love”: Prolific music documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield, whose résumé includes movies on Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur, and Whitney Houston, recounts the romance-turnedfriendship of singer-songwriter legend Leonard Cohen and his longtime muse Marianne Ihlen.
“Bring the Soul: The Movie”: The K-pop boy band drawing Beatles-size fandom is the focus of this behind-the-music, fan-centric concert documentary, opening in theaters nationwide Wednesday.
