Jewish Food Festival debuts Aug. 18-19 in Mequon
Potato knishes, stuffed cabbage, deli sandwiches, falafel: Look for these and other traditional Jewish and Israeli foods at the first Jewish Food Festival, to be held Aug. 18 and 19 at Virmond Park in Mequon.
Besides eating and entertainment, the festival will have activities for children, including challah braiding and making kosher dill pickles.
The festival is being organized by the Peltz Center for Jewish Life, which will use the proceeds for its outreach programs.
“This festival is a great way for the community to come together and strengthen Jewish awareness while enjoying delicious, authentic Jewish food,” festival coordinator Rabbi Moshe Luchins said in announcing the food fest.
Entertainment will include live music, a graffiti artist, a magician and a juggler. The Fun Zone ($3) for children includes face painting, a petting zoo, an inflatable zone with slide and activities.
The festival will feature rotisserie chicken on Aug. 18 and glazed beef ribs on Aug. 19. Daily, the festival will have items including schnitzel sandwiches or platters, schwarma on pita or platters, pastrami sandwiches, corned beef sandwiches, kosher hot dogs, pulled beef on pretzel buns, sweet noodle kugel, Israeli salad and sauerkraut.
Desserts will include babka, churros, rugelach, cotton candy and apple strudel. Menu items will range from $3 for a knish to $15.95 for the beef ribs.
The festival is open from noon to 7 p.m. each day at the 63-acre Virmond Park, which has views of Lake Michigan; the Ozaukee County park is at 10606 N. Lake Shore Drive in Mequon. Admission and parking are free.
