Developers drop unpopular Bayside plans

- Jeff Rumage

The developers behind the controversial OneNorth project in Bayside have decided to withdraw their proposal, according to an email newsletter published Thursday by Village Manager Andy Pederson.

“The applicant(s) have withdrawn their request and petition for a Planned Unit Development,” Pederson wrote in the newsletter. “No further information is available and no further meetings are scheduled.”

The newsletter announcement comes less than two days after resident outcry against the project at a public hearing in front of the Bayside Plan Commission on Tuesday.

The developers, Cobalt Partners and La Macchia Holdings, had submitted a request for the land to be zoned as planned unit development.

The revised development proposal featured a 15-story apartment building in place of the 30-story high-rise initially proposed last August. The OneNorth campus also included nine other buildings featuring retail, restaurants and office space.

The revised plans also included a 25,000-square-foot space for the North Shore Library, which has been asking community leaders in Bayside, Fox Point, Glendale and River Hills for a $4.2 million renovation.

When the revised proposal was unveiled at a public hearing in June, only about a dozen people aired complaints.

The relatively low-key reaction did not last long, though.

The public hearing on Tuesday drew more than 125 Bayside residents. Roughly 30 people spoke in opposition to the height of the buildings, the potential for additional traffic and the possibility of financial assistance from the village.

Developer Scott Yauck of Cobalt Partners LLC was not immediately available to for an interview on the decision to drop the proposal.
