Business plan would invest $66M into Mitchell Park Domes

- William Langhorne

A Milwaukee County task force is expected to vote Tuesday on a business plan that would invest $66 million into restoring the Mitchell Park Domes.

The plan, which will be considered by the Mitchell Park Domes Task Force, comes after previous proposals, including one to demolish the domes and build a public museum building in its place.

According to County Supervisor Jason Haas, a member of the task force, the new proposal will expand the focus of the park beyond just the domes.

The business plan breaks down the cost of the initiative as $13.5 million coming from private donations, $13.5 million from the county, and $39 million from tax credits and opportunity zone investments.

The proposal estimates that 300 jobs would be created within 10 years.

“The bulk of it would be related to ag and conservationism,” Haas said.

Recommendations in the plan include:

❚ Reinstalling gardens throughout the park, including a children’s and family garden, a wedding garden, and an area devoted to urban agriculture and health.

❚ Turning the boathouse at the lagoon into a wedding and catering center.

❚ Establish new buildings for apprenticeships geared toward horticulture, marketing and sales.

❚ Adding a full-service, year-round restaurant that would include outdoor dining and food trucks.

❚ Adding more trails and parking. The task force meets at 5:30 p.m. at Journey House, 2110 W. Scott St.

Its recommendation would go to the County Board.
