Nominations open for the Journal Sentinel’s Top Workplaces

Nominations are now open for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s 2020 Top Workplaces program, by far the longest-running and most prestigious celebration of the region’s great places to work.

This is the 11th year that the Journal Sentinel has sponsored Top Workplaces, in conjunction with Energage, the research partner for the project.

“Earning Top Workplaces recognition is a great way for employers to stand out in a competitive job market,” said Bob Helbig, media partnerships director at Energage.

“We know Top Workplaces attract high-quality job candidates. And more than anything, the recognition that comes with Top Workplaces is validation for the hard work that goes into creating an outstanding workplace culture.”

In partnership with Energage, we’ll spend the next few months surveying tens of thousands of employees at participating small, medium and large employers in southeastern Wisconsin about a host of issues: leadership,

compensation, work environment, communication and other factors.

Participation is open to any organization — public, private, nonprofit or government — with 50 or more employees in the 10-county area — Milwaukee, Waukesha, Washington, Ozaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Walworth, Sheboygan, Jefferson or Dodge.

To nominate a company, go to www.jsonline.com/nominate. Nominations by phone are accepted at (414) 376-5560. The nomination deadline is Sept. 27.

Energage conducts Top Workplaces surveys for 50 major metro newspapers and surveyed 2.6 million employees at more than 7,500 organizations in 2018.

Last spring, 150 Milwaukee area employers with a total of 102,325 employees were recognized as Top Workplaces.

Employers receiving such recognition use the honor in advertising and recruitment efforts, reminding current and prospective employees of their culture of excellence.

Recognition as a Top Workplace gives employees credit for creating something special, raises the profile of businesses or organizations in the community, and lets prospective employees see at a glance that a workplace stands out among its peers.

Anyone can nominate a company or organization, and those nominated will be asked to have their employees participate in confidential online surveys at no cost. The surveys involve about two dozen questions and take just a few minutes for employees to complete.

The surveys will be conducted September through November.

Energage will then analyze the results and produce the rankings. Employers are ranked within three categories based on size: small (50 to 149 employees), midsize (150-499 employees) and large (500 or more).

Energage asks employees to respond to a set of statements about their own workplaces, such as, “I believe this company is going in the right direction,” and, “At this company, we do things efficiently and well.”

Each of the statements has been tested to ensure it has a high correlation with how employees feel about the place they work. The statements help assess employees’ views on organizational health and their own job as well as employee engagement.

Once the survey process is completed, Energage runs statistical tests to look for any questionable results. It disqualifies a small number of employers based on those tests.

Workplaces are grouped into the three size bands because smaller employers tend to score higher than midsize employers, and midsize employers tend to score higher than large employers.

Results will be released in the spring at a breakfast gala and in special sections of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and JSOnline.com.
