CAMP REPORT

- Tom Haudricourt

On the field: Many position players have reported earlier than in past springs and manager Craig Counsell doesn’t think that’s a coincidence. The Brewers put more than $60 million into renovating and expanding their training complex into a beautiful state-of-theart facility, and Counsell thinks players can’t wait to get there.

“I think our complex has changed the nature of that question (of reporting early),” Counsell said. “So many guys are using our complex. As we’ve gone into Year 2 of having this facility, it’s even happened faster than we could have expected. The value we think we’re getting out of it. It’s really been situations like that.”

As for what the primary value might be, Counsell said, “I think a health and strength perspective. As far as the pitching, I think we’ve undertook a program that we think can pay long-term dividends. Where would the (pitching) lab have been in the old clubhouse?” Weather: Sunny, 72 degrees.

Scoreboard: First Cactus League game, Saturday, vs. Texas at Surprise, 2 p.m. CT.

Cactus Juice: Before Christian Yelich assisted the Bucks’ Pat Connaughton in the NBA dunk contest Saturday night, teammate Lorenzo Cain insisted he could still dunk a basketball. Informed of that after arriving to camp Sunday morning, Yelich would have none of it. “‘Lo’ can’t (dunk),” Yelich said. “Maybe back in the day. I saw what he said yesterday about his basketball days and it gave me a good laugh. That’s why he’s playing baseball now.”

Countdown: 38 days until the Brewers’ season opener.
