Another sign that spring’s looming: It’s time to think about your bike. If you don’t have one, or maybe want a new one, check out the 12th annual Bike
Bazaar running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Riverside University High School Community Center, 1615 E. Locust St. Admission is $5, $3 with a Milwaukee Public Schools or college student I.D., and free for kids 12 and younger. (A $10 VIP entry gets you in the door at 9 a.m., with a first shot at what’s for sale.) Proceeds from ticket sales go to the MPS Mountain Bike team. Info: milwaukeerecreation.net
Get in step with ‘We Are the Drum’
Capita Productions’ annual production of “We Are the Drum,” which celebrates African American tradition and culture using music, song and dance and features a number of local performers, debuts Saturday with performances at 3 and 7 p.m. at the Milwaukee Marshall High School Auditorium, 4141 N. 64th St. (A talk-back with the cast follows the 3 p.m. performance.) Take the leap to steampunk at the Domes
The Garden & Gears Steampunk Fair blends Victorian delights, sci-fi gadgetry and greenery from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Mitchell Park Domes, 524 S. Layton Blvd. Artists and makers inspired by steampunk will ply their wares; dressing up in Victorian finery is encouraged. The fair is included with regular admission to the Domes: $8, $6 for kids ages 6 to 17, and free for children 5 and younger. Info: countyparks.com
Shop and sip in Walker’s Point
About 50 creators, craftspeople and other makers will be selling their wares in boozy surroundings Saturday during the Walker's Point
Makers Market and Bar Hop. The makers will be setting up shop in Great Lakes Distillery, 616 W. Virginia St.; MobCraft Beer, 505 S. Fifth St.; and Indeed Brewing Co., 530 S. Experience the power of the arts, on screen
Skylight Music Theatre is hosting free screenings Saturday of “Midsummer in Newtown,” a documentary about an effort to use the staging of a musical based on “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to help heal the community of Newtown, Connecticut, after the Sandy Hook tragedy. (The added connection: Skylight artistic director Michael Unger conceived, adapted and directed the play for NewArts, an organization he founded in Newtown with Newtown parent Michael Baroody.) The screenings are at 2 and 7:30 p.m. in the Cabot Theatre at the Broadway Theatre Center, 158 N. Broadway. Admission is free, but reservations are required (see website for details). Catch ‘Portrait of Milwaukee’ before it’s gone
Milwaukee’s getting ready for its closeup this summer with the Democratic National Convention coming to town. But the city’s already getting its closeup at the Milwaukee Art Museum, where “Portrait of
Milwaukee,” an exhibit of photographs from the 1930s through today concludes its run on Sunday. The museum’s hours this weekend are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The exhibit is included with admission to the art museum, 700 N. Art Museum Drive: $19; $17 for students, seniors 65 and older, and members of the military; and free for museum members and kids 12 and younger.
