CAMP REPORT
On the field: Keston Hiura hit a tapemeasure home run in the fourth inning, but that accounted for the Brewers’ lone score Wednesday in a 5-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox at American Family Fields of Phoenix.
Hiura launched a first-pitch breaking ball from right-hander Dylan Cease over the batter’s eye in center, tying the game at 1-1. It was quiet otherwise for the Brewers, who came just a Logan Morrison single away from falling victim to a perfect game Tuesday in Peoria. “Their pitcher’s got a nice arm, there’s no question,” manager Craig Counsell said. “Keston’s swung the bat well this spring. I think he’s done a nice job. Just a first-pitch breaking ball, kind of getme-over, and he did something good with it.”
Brandon Woodruff started his third game and surrendered three hits and an unearned run with a strikeout. Corbin Burnes followed and continued his outstanding work, allowing three hits in three shutout innings with four strikeouts.
Chicago broke the game open with three runs off Devin Williams in the seventh inning.
Weather: 68 degrees, sunny.
Scoreboard: White Sox 5, White Sox 1.
Record: 6-4-1. Thursday: Brewers at Reds, 2:05 p.m. Milwaukee RHP Freddy Peralta vs. Cincinnati RHP Luis Castillo. TV: FS Wisconsin.
Cactus juice: Justin Grimm allowed his first hit and first run in four spring outings on Wednesday. But he could be excused if he was a little distracted after his wife, Gina, gave birth to the couple’s second son, Jaxon, in Nashville in the morning.
Grimm, a non-roster invitee, did the best he could by taking part via FaceTime before taking the mound later in the day.
“Life of a professional baseball player,” manager Craig Counsell said. “He was planning on being here, I guess, but he did a nice job today. His slider at the end of that inning got going, and that’s his pitch.”
Countdown: 21 days until the Brewers’ season opener on March 26 vs. the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park.
