Prep awards show postponed
The Journal Sentinel High School Sports Awards Show is on hold.
The Riverside Theater, site of the show this year, has postponed all shows through May 15 after the recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control to limit large gatherings to slow the spread of coronavirus.
The Journal Sentinel's show was scheduled for May 6. Plans are in the works to reschedule the event or provide an alternative option to celebrate the athletic accomplishments of southeast Wisconsin's prep athletes.
WBCA honors La Crosse pair
La Crosse Central wing and Wisconsin recruit Johnny Davis was named the 2020 Mr. Basketball by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association.
La Crosse Aquinas guard Lexi Donarski, an Iowa State recruit, capped off her standout prep caboys reer by receiving the Miss Basketball honor.
Davis averaged 27.6 points per game for the Red Raiders, who reached the Division 2 sectional final before the season was ended due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Davis and his twin brother, Jordan, committed to play for the Badgers last June and will join the team on scholarship in the fall.
Davis was also named first team all-state as a football player this past fall as a quarterback.
Donarski averaged 24.2 points, 7 assists and 5 steals per game for the Blugolds and finished with 2,106 points.
Aquinas lost only three games in Donarski's four years and won two state titles. The Blugolds reached a fourth straight championship game before the season was cut short Thursday.
Donarski also excelled in volleyball and track, reaching state in both sports.
Bestor leaves Kettle Moraine
Brad Bestor, who led a recent turnaround for the Kettle Moraine basketball program, is stepping down from his position.
“As far as the competitor in me, what we have in place right now moving forward, there's a bunch of years of good talent, good families passionate about basketball and committed to kids getting better,” Bestor said. “The program should be competitive for a while. On the basketball side, that's tough to walk away from.”
Bestor announced last week that he would no longer be the Lasers head coach, ending a 14-year run.
“At this time, being the head coach at Kettle Moraine can no longer be my primary focus, as I have three growing boys ages 13, 12 and 9 that need their dad to be evermore present in their lives,” Bestor wrote in a letter to the program.
Bestor had a successful run after taking over at Kettle Moraine in 2006. During the previous three seasons, the Lasers had won a combined 13 games.
Bestor went on to compile a 171157 record as the Lasers won two Classic 8 championships.
