Roundy’s plans to hire 2,500 workers throughout state

- Tom Daykin

Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc. wants to hire up to 2,500 workers for its Pick ’n Save and Metro Market stores throughout Wisconsin, the Milwaukee-based company announced Friday.

Roundy’s, like other supermarket operators, is seeing a surge in demand from shoppers stocking up on food, toilet paper and other items as social distancing, quarantines and other measures are enacted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company needs help in all positions and all shifts at 106 Wisconsin stores. This includes full-time, parttime and salaried management positions.

Roundy’s benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, 401(k) savings plans, tuition reimbursement, vacation days and an employee assistance program.

Potential candidates may apply directly at a store location or at the Kroger careers website. Roundy’s is a subsidiary of Cincinnati-based Kroger Co., which operates supermarkets nationwide.

Meanwhile, Roundy’s recently changed its store hours from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. until further notice.

The additional off hours will provide extra time to clean and sanitize stores and restock shelves as workers deal with the unprecedented surge in shopping over the last two weeks.

Roundy’s also announced “senior hours” from 6 to 8 a.m each day to help support the shopping needs of the elderly and those with underlying health concerns.

Roundy’s has approximately 12,500 employees in Wisconsin, a count that includes the downtown Milwaukee headquarters, said Danella Uzelac, a company spokeswoman.

Kroger also operates a Kenosha commissary and the Oconomowoc distribution center. Those facilities together have another 1,000 employees.

Also, in response to strong demand in stores, Walmart is hiring 150,000 new employees through the end of May.

In Wisconsin, Walmart plans to hire more than 4,200 people to work in stores, distribution centers and fulfillment centers.
