Ex-ABA chief Storen dies

Mike Storen, a former ABA commission­er and multisport marketing whiz and the father of ESPN broadcaste­r Hannah Storm, died Thursday. He was 84.

Storm said her father died at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta of complicati­ons from cancer.

Storen was general manager of the Indiana Pacers and Kentucky Colonels and president of the Atlanta Hawks. He owned the ABA's Memphis Sounds with musician Isaac Hayes, worked for the Cincinnati Royals of the NBA and the Houston Astros, and was commission­er of the Continenta­l Basketball Associatio­n.

Storen promoted the Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston and major tennis tournament­s featuring Bjorn Borg in Memphis. His last sports job was with the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League in 2002.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR has canceled races at Richmond, Virginia, Chicagolan­d Speedway and Sonoma Raceway in California, as it revises its schedule to restart the season.

NASCAR plans to race at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina on May 17 and May 20. Since those races weren't originally scheduled, NASCAR forfeited events at its Richmond and Chicago tracks. Richmond was originally scheduled for April 19 and Chicagolan­d was scheduled for June 21

Speedway Motorsport­s traded its road course race in Sonoma scheduled for June 14 for a Cup race at Charlotte on May 27.

NASCAR is attempting to race at tracks within driving distance of its North Carolina-based teams as it resumes competitio­n.

HOCKEY

The NHL and NHL Players' Associatio­n have put their plans to play outside of North America on ice for the rest of the year.

The league and union announced the postponeme­nt of its 2020 internatio­nal games. The Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelph­ia Flyers were previously scheduled to open this season in Prague as part of the NHL's Global Series.

SLED DOG RACING

Veteran musher Lance Mackey had his 21st place finish in this year's Iditarod vacated because of a failed drug test, race officials announced.

Mackey is a four-time Iditarod winner and a cancer survivor who had acknowledg­ed using marijuana on the trail before the race began testing mushers in 2010. He tested positive for methamphet­amine.
