Customers get too sociable; drive-in closes early

- Evan Frank

The Kiltie Drive-In, a popular Oconomowoc establishment that opened in 1946, had to close early over the weekend after customers were not following social distancing guidelines.

Just after 8 p.m. Saturday, The Kiltie’s Facebook page announced the drive-in would shut down for the night after people failed to follow guidelines established by Gov. Tony Evers’ saferat-home order.

“We CHOSE to close tonight,” the post stated. “We respectfully are a drive-in, we are open for curbside, and take out orders only! TOO many customers were leaving their vehicles and socializing with other people! We need you to stay in your vehicles when you come up.”

The Kiltie, N48 W36154 E. Wisconsin Ave., is usually open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

When The Kiltie, a seasonal drive-in known for its distinct red sign above the canopy and classic sundaes, opened May 4, it advised people via Facebook to stay in their cars and that food would be served to-go.

The Facebook page also said the Kiltie only accepts cash or check.

Since Evers’ order went into effect in late March as a measure to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, restaurants have been able to stay open by offering curbside pickup and takeout. The order stays in effect until May 26.

The Kiltie said its employees who interact with customers wear masks and gloves while the employees inside do their best to also stay protected.

“But we can ONLY stay open to service you, if everyone remains in their vehicles,” the post stated.

The drive-in reopened the next day for Mother’s Day.
