Intruder does minor damage to Miller Park field

- Tom Haudricourt

An individual entered Miller Park early Tuesday morning and did minor damage to the playing surface, but a source familiar with the situation indicated the Milwaukee Brewers did not consider the incident related to ongoing protests and damage being done in areas of the city.

The Brewers issued this statement later Tuesday morning:

“At approximately 7 a.m. this morning, an unarmed individual illegally entered Miller Park and gained access to the playing surface. He was apprehended a short time later by law enforcement after causing minor damage to the field. As this involves an ongoing investigation, we unfortunately cannot provide additional details at this time.”

The source said there was “zero indication” the person's actions were connected to social unrest related to the killing of George Floyd, an African American, by a white police officer in Minneapolis.

The Milwaukee Police Department later released his information to the Journal Sentinel:

“Milwaukee Police are investigating a burglary that occurred on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, at approximately 7:38 a.m. on 100 block of S. Brewers Way.

“The suspect gained access to the playing surface and caused minor damage. The suspect, a 40-year-old man was arrested. Criminal charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office in the upcoming days.”

The grounds crew has kept Miller Park ready for action in the event Major League Baseball returns to action after being shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Should spring training resume, the Brewers are expected to work out at Miller Park rather than return to their facility in Phoenix.
