Journal Sentinel, community partners launch live discussions on Facebook.

- David D. Haynes

Listening can be a superpower. Listening is how we learn. Listening is how we engage.

With that in mind, the Ideas Lab at the Journal Sentinel and community partners are launching Listen MKE Live, an extension of our yearlong Listen MKE project, where we’ve created space for listening and discussion on Milwaukee’s north side.

Our debut event at noon Tuesday features Markasa Tucker, director of the African American Roundtable, and Walter Lanier, pastor of Progressive Baptist Church and a mental health advocate. Their topic: What are the goals of activists who are marching to protest the death of George Floyd? What does the community need most right now?

Join hosts James E. Causey of the Journal Sentinel and Teran Powell of WUWM, 89.7-FM - Milwaukee’s NPR on Facebook Live.

Milwaukee PBS will air the discussion along with additional dialogue during a half-hour special edition of “10thirtysix” on Channel 10 at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Listen MKE Live is a collaborative project of the Journal Sentinel, WUWM, the Milwaukee Public Library and our newest partner, Milwaukee PBS.

We launched Listen MKE a year ago on June 19 — Juneteenth Day — with a booth at the popular event along King Drive.

We’ve learned a lot in a year, perhaps especially how much we don’t know.

But one of our jobs, we believe, is to foster inclusive communication and dialogue that helps make the community stronger. It’s what the journalism organization Journalism That Matters has called “civic communications.” That group coined the phrase: “Listening is our superpower.”

It coined this phrase as well: “Nothing about us without us,” which speaks to the imperative we feel to make sure that all members of the community have a voice.

Please join us Tuesday for a live discussion and then tune into Channel 10 for a special half-hour edition of “10thirtysix” on Thursday.
