Standout safety Adams requests a trade from Jets

-

All-pro safety Jamal Adams has requested a trade from the New York Jets amid a contract dispute, a source said.

The 24-year-old Adams has been seeking a contract extension, and the Jets have said they want the safety to remain a member of the team his entire career. But, the conflict apparently is about the timing: Adams wants the extension now, while the team prefers to wait until next year, at the earliest.

The Jets are in no rush to address Adams’ contract because they hold rights to the safety through next season and could also potentially use the franchise tag on him in 2022. But, it appears Adams is now trying to force the team’s hand to get the new deal he covets.

Through social media, Adams has made his frustration at the team’s slow pace in addressing his situation well known. On Thursday, he responded to a comment on Instagram and indicated that he might be looking to play elsewhere.

“Maybe it’s time to move on!” Adams said in the post.

Adams also recently accused the Jets of “a lot of talk, no action” on another Instagram post.

Meanwhile, the team’s stance – that it wants to have Adams on the team his entire career – has not changed.

Adams’ mind, however, appears to be on playing elsewhere. ESPN reported that Adams has seven teams he’d welcome being traded to: Baltimore, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle.

Adams was drafted by the Jets with the sixth overall pick out of LSU in 2017. He quickly became one of the faces of the franchise and the team’s best allaround player. Adams has made the Pro Bowl the last two seasons and is generally regarded as arguably the league’s top safety.

San Francisco’s James injured: San Francisco 49ers receiver Richie James Jr. has broken his right wrist during offseason workouts and won’t be ready to return to the field until after the start of training camp.

The 49ers confirmed a report of the injury by NFL Network and said they will have a better idea of how long James will be sidelined after he reports to training camp next month. NFL Network said James is expected to miss at least two months.

James is the second receiver lost to injury this week for the defending NFC champion 49ers. No. 1 wideout Deebo Samuel underwent surgery Thursday to repair a fracture in his left foot suffered during informal player workouts in Tennessee. Samuel said he expects to be back in 10 weeks, meaning his will miss the start of training camp but should be healthy for the season opener Sept. 13.

Players on all NFL teams have been working out away from team facilities this offseason because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patriots offer fans a deal: The New England Patriots are offering season ticket holders at an elevated risk of COVID-19 infection the chance to skip the 2020 season entirely and still hold onto their seats for the next year.

The policy appears to be the most generous – or perhaps cautious – yet announced by an NFL team in response to the coronavirus pandemic, going beyond the league’s blanket offer of a full refund for games not played and allowing fans to opt out in advance “if because of age or an underlying health condition (they) are in a population the CDC has identified as being at higher risk of illness from COVID-19.”

“By completing this agreement now, your seat location will be protected for the 2021 season,” the Patriots said in an email to season ticket holders this week. A copy of the email was obtained by The Associated Press.

Typically, fans who cancel their season tickets lose the chance to buy those seats in future years.
