UW-Madison’s Union Terrace to reopen as outdoor restaurant
The Memorial Union Terrace on UWMadison’s lakefront will begin a phased reopening on Monday.
But visitors to the Union this summer can expect to see a few changes.
The space on the waterfront — typically known as a great place to sit and read, watch bands, feed ducks or watch kids chase each other around — will function as a restaurant for now.
Before arriving, patrons will need to make a reservation, which can last for up to 90 minutes and include up to six guests. Capacity will be limited to 25%.
UW-Madison students, faculty and staff; those affiliated with the Wisconsin Union; and active-duty U.S. military members can make a reservation for free. Other guests will be required to purchase a $5 one-day pass to reserve a table. One ID or pass is needed per reservation. The Terrace is open from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily and will close in the event of inclement weather.
To-go orders will be available via the Grubhub app.
To keep customers safe throughout the reopening, the Terrace is implementing several new procedures:
Hand sanitizer will be readily available.
Cashless payments only. Tables will be spaced at least six feet apart.
Self-serve condiments and beverages will be removed.
Union staff will wear face coverings and gloves.
Seating areas will be cleaned between reservations.
“It wasn’t difficult to get a team together to be excited about opening the Terrace,” said Mark Guthier, the Union’s director and associate vice chancellor for student affairs.
“We’ve been desperate to do work since April.”
