2021 schedule:

Cubs are a frequent opponent in first month

- Tom Haudricourt

Brewers open April 1 at Miller Park vs. Twins,

Three days after they learned their opponents for the delayed 60-game 2020 season, the Milwaukee Brewers were given their schedule for the entire 2021 season Thursday.

In the earliest schedule release ever by Major League Baseball, the Brewers were given a season-opening date of Thursday, April 1 at home against "regional rival" Minnesota at Miller Park. It will be the first time Milwaukee has opened a season with interleague play.

The Brewers are off on the Friday after that opener before finishing the three-game series against the Twins. They then will go to Chicago to play the Cubs at Wrigley Field, their first of two trips there in April, when the weather is usually quite brisk in the Windy City. The Brewers and Cubs play each other nine times in the opening month.

In other scheduling quirks, the Brewers will play National League Central rival St. Louis 10 times in September, and play four games at home against Cincinnati before the all-star break, then go to Cincinnati for three games out of the break, in essence giving them seven in a row against the Reds.

The NL Central is matched against the American League Central in 2021 even though the scheduled matchups vs. the AL East in 2020 never happened because of the pandemic-shortened schedule.

The Brewers will finish the '21 season with a trip to St. Louis and Los Angeles, with three games each against the Cardinals and Dodgers.

Beyond the opening series against the Twins, the Brewers will play interleague series in Minnesota on Aug. 2729, at home against Detroit from May 31-June 1, Kansas City from July 20-21 and the Chicago White Sox from July 23-25; and on the road against Cleveland from Sept. 10-12 and Detroit from Sept. 14-15.

The Brewers' longest home stand will be 10 games from Sept. 17-26 against the Cubs (three games), Cardinals (four games) and New York Mets (three games). Their longest trip covers 10 games from Aug. 9-19 against the Cubs (four games), Pirates (three games) and Cardinals (three games).

As far as holidays go, the Brewers will play in Miami on Mother's Day, May 9; at home against Detroit on Memorial Day, May 31; at Colorado on Father's Day, June 20; at Pittsburgh on the Fourth of July; and at home against Philadelphia on Labor Day, Sept. 6.

Every team is scheduled to start April 1, as MLB hopes to have every team play its first game on the same day for the first time since 1968.

Atlanta will host the 91st All-Star Game on July 13 at Truist Park.
