What should Milwaukee look like in a year or so?

- James E. Causey

We all know about the deep problems Milwaukee faces, ones that show up as racial inequities in housing, education and more. The Milwaukee’s Promise project is aimed at solutions and moving the city — really the whole region — forward.

That’s where we need your help. Please think about Milwaukee’s future. What does our community look like, not decades in the future, but just a year or 18 months from now?

We are asking residents to create their own vision boards, a long-standing tool that helps individuals focus on what they want to see in the future. Typically, such vision boards have words and images clipped from magazines or newspapers or downloaded from the internet.

The key is to focus on how you want things to be, rather than how they are. For instance, if your vision includes safer neighborhoods, you might picture children playing safely together. If it includes better housing, it might show repairs being made in a neighborhood.

Once you’ve created your vision, send us a copy or a photo of it for the opportunity to have your board displayed on JSOnline.com and social media, shared with community leaders and politicians, and featured in a community event.

We’re also asking community leaders to create vision boards. On Aug. 12, from noon to 1 p.m., we’ll host a live discussion where six leaders will present theirs.

A future event will feature Milwaukee residents selected to share their boards.

More details will be announced soon.

To submit your vision board, please fill out the form at jsonline .com/visionboard.
