Documents: Victim, friend had argument before fatal shooting

- Elliot Hughes

Two men shot and killed a 20year-old Milwaukee man on July 1 after the victim had apparently been in an argument with another friend earlier the same day, a criminal complaint said.

First-degree reckless homicide charges have been filed against Eric J.A. Gibson, 21, of Milwaukee and Darius C. Anderson, 20, of Brown Deer after Myles E. Laster, 20, was found with a gunshot wound to his head in a car on Milwaukee’s north side.

Both are in Milwaukee County Jail with cash bail set at $85,000 for Anderson and $75,000 for Gibson, according to online records. They both face life in prison if convicted. According to the criminal complaint: Around 7:45 p.m. July 1, police found Laster’s body in a car on the 7800 block of North 60th Street in Milwaukee’s Bradley Estates neighborhood. A witness told police he heard a gunshot shortly before 7 p.m.

Police reviewed surveillance video from a nearby school and saw Laster’s car park on the block near 6:25 p.m. A man who identified himself as Laster called 911 at 6:21 and 6:42 p.m. to report an altercation he had with a woman, who is not identified in the criminal complaint, earlier that day.

The surveillance video also showed another car briefly pulling up next to Laster’s car before driving away at 6:51 p.m.

The woman told police that earlier in the day, she spoke to Gibson about having argued with Laster, saying she was so angry she could kill him. Gibson replied, “No you aren’t, I am,” according to the woman.

She later met with Gibson and Anderson that night. The two asked her if she had told anyone else about her argument with Laster and she said no. Gibson said, “OK good, it’s taken care of,” while Anderson told her that if anyone asks, “We were at the beach all day.”

Later, after the woman saw a news article about the shooting, she asked Anderson and Gibson about it. Anderson told a witness he shot Laster while Gibson drove the car.

The car that briefly paused by Laster’s car in the surveillance video matched the description of Gibson’s mother’s vehicle. Gibson admitted to police he was driving the vehicle with Anderson the night of the shooting.
