City development head moving to Milwaukee

- Tom Daykin

Among the things on new Milwaukee Development Commissioner Lafayette Crump's to-do list: move to Milwaukee.

Crump is a Wauwatosa resident — as noted in a recent Journal Sentinel story that mentioned his membership on that city's Equity and Inclusion Commission.

Crump said Thursday he is planning to soon move to the city where he was born and raised.

“I am looking forward to being a Milwaukee resident again,” he said.

His residency in Wauwatosa, where Crump has lived for 17 years, didn't come up at a June 30 confirmation hearing before the Milwaukee Common Council's Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee. However, Crump said he disclosed his Wauwatosa residency during meetings with individual council members.

“I know that Mr. Crump is actively searching for residence in Milwaukee,” said Ald. Cavalier Johnson, council president.

The council on July 8 unanimously approved Crump's appointment by Mayor Tom Barrett. He started in his new position one week later.

Crump was chief diversity, vendor and engagement officer at the Milwaukee 2020 Host Committee for the Democratic National Convention.

Also, Crump has led Prism Technical Management & Marketing Services LLC.

That consulting firm works with developers and general contractors to hire subcontractors that are disadvantaged businesses enterprises, which are typically owned by women and people of color.

He succeeded Rocky Marcoux, who retired after 16 years as commissioner.
