Leaders will share their vision for city’s future

- James E. Causey Milwaukee Journal Sentinel USA TODAY NETWORK – WISCONSIN ANGELA PETERSON / JOURNAL SENTINEL

What is your vision for improving Milwaukee?

Better police/community relations? Higher performing schools? Safer streets? More and better jobs? An end to racism?

On Aug. 12, six community leaders will share their vision for Milwaukee’s future as part of our Milwaukee’s Promise project. The online discussion, set for noon, will be moderated by columnist James E. Causey of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Causey and photojournalist Angela Peterson are completing the Milwaukee’s Promise project, which aims to improve stubborn problems facing our community, with support from Marquette University’s Diederich Fellowship in Public Service Journalism and the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.

The six participants in the discussion are:

Natalie Hayden, co-founder of ExPosed podcast.

Camille Mays, founder of the Peace Garden Project MKE.

Imani Ray, program coordinator at Urban Underground.

Montell Ross, LGBTQ organizer. Jeremy Triblett, founder at Anapto Training and Presentation Design.

Venice Williams, executive director at Alice’s Garden Urban Farm.

This Listen MKE Live community listening project will allow each participant a chance to discuss the vision boards they have created, which reflect what they would like Milwaukee to look like 12 to 18 months from now. They will also discuss what’s holding back our city and community.

The event, which will run from noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 12, will be livestreamed on the Journal Sentinel Facebook page, and that of other participating organizations. Viewers will be able to submit questions during the event.

Listen MKE Live is a project of the Ideas Lab at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, WUWM 89.7-Milwaukee’s NPR, the Milwaukee Public Library, and Milwaukee PBS.

Readers and residents are also invited to create and share their own vision boards. The purpose of a vision board is to represent goals with pictures and words. Please focus on what the future should look like, not the problems we now face.

For instance, if your vision is lower crime and safer neighborhoods, you could include a photo of children playing in a park, instead of police tape.

Once you create your vision board, send us a photo of it for the opportunity to have your board displayed on JSOnline.com and social media, shared with community leaders and politicians, and featured in a community event.

You can find more information on vision boards and this effort at JSOnline.com/MKEvision.
