Homestead names interim football co-coaches
Coaching football at Homestead will be a tag-team effort this season.
The Mequon-Thiensville School District announced Friday that Matt Wolf and Drake Zortman will serve as interim co-head coaches. The two succeed Dave Keel, who resigned last week after 30 seasons.
In a news release, the district said the search for the program’s next coach would take place later this school year.
The news came five weeks before the start of practice (Sept.7) and provides continuity for a team that will try to reclaim the top spot in the North Shore Conference after having its 18-year streak of league titles snapped in 2019.
Wolf has been the team’s defensive coordinator since 2015.
Before that he was the special teams coordinator from 2006-14.
Homestead has won five state titles during his time on staff (2006, ‘08, ‘12, ‘15 and ‘18).
Zortman has been the offensive coordinator since 2015 and was a member of the Homestead coaching staff in 1999, when the school won its first state title.
He spent four seasons (2011-14) as the head coach at Messmer/Shorewood, leading that program to the Midwest Classic Conference title in 2013.
For the upcoming season, Zortman and Wolf will continue in their role as coordinators.
Wolf will also take over the special teams.
“They complement each other extremely well and are integral parts of Homestead High School and the Mequon-Thiensville community,” Homestead athletic director Erich Hinterstocker said in a news release. “As longtime assistant coaches and coordinators within the program, they have played critical roles in the success of the HHS football program.
The relationships they have built during their time at Homestead will be extremely important as they work to support our student-athletes in the classroom and on the field during a season that is unlike any other.”
