Milwaukee man killed in head-on crash in Caledonia

A 69-year-old Milwaukee man was killed in a head-on crash in Caledonia while trying to avoid another vehicle that failed to yield Monday.

The man was driving a Honda sedan north on Highway 38 approachin­g 4 Mile Road when a vehicle heading west on 4 Mile Road stopped for a stop sign but then pulled into the intersecti­on into the path of the Honda, Caledonia police said.

The Honda driver swerved into the southbound lane of Highway 38 to avoid striking the vehicle and was struck headon by a pickup truck driven by a 67-yearold Oak Creek man.

The driver of the Honda died at the scene and the pickup truck driver was injured. The driver of the vehicle that caused the crash drove around the crash and left the scene.

I-43 closed for four hours in downtown Milwaukee

North and southbound lanes of I-43 near Kilbourn Avenue were closed for nearly four hours Tuesday as police negotiated with a man on an overpass.

Milwaukee police said they responded to the 1000 block of West Wells Street with a subject on an overpass. After more than three hours of crisis negotiatio­ns, the 27-year-old man jumped off the bridge and suffered injuries that were not life-threatenin­g, police said. He was taken to a hospital.

The interstate was closed about 10:45 a.m. and was reopened by 2:30 p.m., according to the Wisconsin Department of Transporta­tion and the Milwaukee County Sheriff ’s Office.

The incident caused closures on I-43 and West Wells Street, from North 10th to North 11th streets.

Packers’ Smith pleads no contest in Racine County speeding case

Green Bay Packers’ linebacker Za’Darius Smith pleaded no contest last week to a reduced speeding charge and prosecutor­s dismissed a citation for possessing marijuana, according to online court records.

Smith, 27, got the tickets in Racine County last fall while returning to Green Bay from Chicago. His initial court appearance had been set for Thursday.

Smith’s initial speeding citation was for 20-24 mph over the limit on I-94, but he pleaded guilty to one for 11-14 mph over the limit. Online court records do not indicate the amount of any fine.

Kanye West attempting to get on Wisconsin ballot

MADISON - Kanye West has reportedly hired a petitionin­g firm to get the 2,000 valid signatures he needs to appear on the November presidenti­al ballot in Wisconsin.

West hired the firm Let the Voters Decide, which sent 45 people to Wisconsin to get the signatures by the 5 p.m. Tuesday deadline, according to New York Magazine.

The rapper is making similar attempts in Ohio, Arkansas and West Virginia. His campaign filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Elections Commission on July 16.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission declined to comment, as it was unclear if West’s campaign would file the signatures before the Tuesday deadline.
