MOVIES: WHAT’S NEW IN MILWAUKEE-AREA THEATERS AND DRIVE-INS

- Chris Foran

For the first time since mid-March, more movie theaters will be open in the Milwaukee than will be closed.

At least three more theaters reopen this Friday: AMC Mayfair Mall and Marcus Theatres’ North Shore and Hillside cinemas. They join the half-dozen Marcus theaters that were open as of last Friday, along with Fox-Bay Cinema Grill in Whitefish Bay, the Rivoli Theatre in Cedarburg and Silverspot Cinema in Brookfield. (National trade-industry outlets reported earlier this week that Landmark Theatres would reopen its Milwaukee theater, the Downer, on Friday, but there’s been no apparent action on that front.)

Seven other theaters, including the Avalon Theater and Oriental Theatre, are still dark, shut down in the early weeks of the coronavirus pandemic to rein in the virus’ spread in large-group settings.

A big reason so many theaters have reopened: New movies are back.

That’d be “Tenet,” of course. Christopher Nolan’s plot-twisty, time-bending thriller technically opens in theaters Sept. 3, but in a bid to boost interest (and help theaters get back in business), the movie is showing in “early access screenings” Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Tenet” is playing in most of the area’s first-run theaters that are opening, including AMC Mayfair, Silverspot, FoxBay and all eight Marcus theaters now open: Bistroplex Southridge, Hillside, Majestic, Menomonee Falls, Movie Tavern Brookfield Square, North Shore, Ridge and South Shore cinemas. But there’s more than “Tenet” in the new-movie department this week. Also opening in Milwaukee-area theaters starting Friday:

h “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” a lively new take on the Charles Dickens classic by Armando Iannucci (the brains behind the cable hit “Veep”). It stars Dev Patel in the title role, heading a cast that includes Peter Capaldi, Ben Whishaw, Hugh Laurie and Tilda Swinton. It’s showing at AMC Mayfair, Silverspot and Marcus’ eight reopened venues.

h In “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” the third “Bill & Ted” movie, our heroes (Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter), now midlife underachievers, are told by another

Continued from Page 11B emissary from the future that they have 78 minutes to write a song that will save everyone on Earth, and the future. Available on demand Friday, it’s also showing in some drive-ins and theaters around the country; the only theater in the area showing it is Fox-Bay.

h Teenage mutants are bottled up in a facility out to destroy them until they turn the tables on their captors in this long-delayed Marvel horror/action movie “The New Mutants.” It’s at AMC Mayfair, Fox-Bay, Silverspot and Marcus’ eight reopened venues.

h BTS, the biggest-selling band on the planet, is the focus of “Bring the Soul:

The Movie,” the concert documentary promising an up-close-and-personal look at the Korean pop group. It’s showing Friday through Sunday only at AMC Mayfair and Marcus’ Majestic and South Shore cinemas.

h “The Eight Hundred,” a big-budget Chinese war epic, focuses on a unit of young Chinese military officers trying to protect a strategic warehouse in

Shanghai from the invading Japanese army in 1937. The movie, one of the biggest hits in China this year, is making a rare (for Milwaukee) appearance, showing at Marcus’ Majestic, Menomonee Falls, Ridge and South Shore cinemas.

h In the inspirational drama “Tulsa,” a biker with issues (Scott Pryor) reluctantly agrees to take the 9-year-old daughter (Livi Birch) he didn’t know he had into his home. It opens Friday at Marcus’ Hillside, Majestic and Ridge cinemas.
