New American route opens connections from MKE to Latin America, Caribbean
American Airlines is adding nonstop seasonal service between Milwaukee and Miami International Airport, officials at Mitchell International Airport said Tuesday.
The service begins Nov. 7 and will be offered every Saturday through April 4, 2021.
“Miami has been one of the most requested unserved markets from MKE, and I’m pleased we were able to work with American Airlines to secure this new service,” Brian Dranzik, the airport director at Mitchell, said in a statement.
MKE is the International Air Transport Association destination code for Mitchell International.
“Miami is American’s largest international hub, and this route gives Wisconsin travelers new access to dozens of exciting international markets, including many smaller islands, such as Martinique, Trinidad and Tobago, and the U.S. Virgin Islands,” Dranzik said in the statement.
The new service is designed to meet demand for Wisconsin residents seeking to escape the state’s often harsh winters.
“We know how important access to Miami is, especially during the cold winter months,” Brian Znotins, American’s vice president of network planning, said in a statement. “Non-stop flights to MIA mean just one stop to the Caribbean and Latin America . ... ”
The flights will be operated with WiFi-equipped Embraer E-175 jet aircraft. American will offer 12 first-class, 20 main cabin extra, and 44 main cabin seats on the flights.
The flights are scheduled to depart Milwaukee at 7 a.m. and arrive in Miami at 11:15 a.m.
The return flights are scheduled to depart Miami at 9:35 p.m. and arrive in Milwaukee at 12:05 a.m.
The flights are available for purchase on AA.com and the American Airlines app, the airline said in the statement.
A number of airlines, including Southwest, Frontier and United all offer seasonal service to Florida, but none of them fly nonstop to Miami from Milwaukee.
Southwest and Frontier offer nonstop service between Milwaukee and Orlando.
The Milwaukee-to-Florida routes reach their busiest point during the spring break season when airlines typically add dozens of flights from Milwaukee to the Sunshine State.
Mitchell International is served by Air Canada, Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, Southwest, and United airlines. The airport is owned and operated by Milwaukee County. The airport is entirely funded by user fees.
