WIAC sports suspended

The Wisconsin Intercolle­giate Athletic Conference has suspended its winter sports season through Dec. 31, the conference announced Friday afternoon.

The decision affects men’s and women’s basketball, women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and wrestling.

UW-Oshkosh, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stout, UW-Plattevill­e, UW-River Falls and UW-Whitewater make up the WIAC.

Student-athletes in some winter sports championsh­ips had their 2020 seasons canceled when the coronaviru­s pandemic struck hard in March. The WIAC fall season was suspended this summer.

The WIAC Council of Chancellor­s unanimousl­y voted to suspend the winter seasons after evaluating risks of COVID-19 and safety protocols.

CYCLING

Soren Kragh Andersen, the Danish rider who won Stage 14, raised his arms in victory again in Stage 19 of the Tour de France on Friday, with another cunningly timed attack in Champagnol­e, France.

The focus shifts to the time trial where Primoz Roglic will be aiming to secure his first Tour title.

NASCAR

Chase Briscoe beat Ross Chastain by 0.651 of a second in the Food City 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway for his Xfinity Series-leading seventh victory of the season.

GOLF

Jim Furyk birdied four of the last six holes for an 8-under 64 and the first-round lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ Pure Insurance Championsh­ip in Pebble Beach, Calif.

BASEBALL

The Milwaukee Milkmen defeated Sioux Falls, 4-1, Thursday night to clinch the American Associatio­n championsh­ip series in just their second year as a franchise.

Left-hander David Holmberg pitched 7 13 ⁄ shutout innings, allowing just one hit.
