Giants running back Barkley likely lost for season

-

The New York Giants could be without their offensive centerpiece for the remainder of the season.

Running back Saquon Barkley underwent initial manual tests that indicate the running back suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament Sunday that will end his season, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported.

Barkley exited the Giants’ 17-13 loss to the Chicago Bears with a right knee injury after the first play of the second quarter. After being tackled by Bears safety Eddie Jackson, Barkley grabbed his knee and had to be helped off the field.

Barkley was later ruled out for the remainder of the game and taken to undergo X-rays on his knee. He is expected to undergo further evaluation on Monday, the team said. He had four carries for 28 yards before the injury.

“I wouldn’t fall asleep on 26,” Giants coach Joe Judge told reporters after the game. “It’s gonna be a hell of a story either way.”

Barkley had become the focal point of the Giants’ offense since the team selected him No. 2 overall in the 2018 NFL draft. He recorded a league-high 2,028 yards from scrimmage as a rookie and earned a Pro Bowl berth.

49ers blast turf after numerous injuries: After a costly 49ers victory Sunday against the New York Jets resulted in several San Francisco starters forced to leave the game due to injuries, head coach Kyle Shanahan and a Niners player criticized the field at MetLife Stadium and called for the NFL to intervene.

The 49ers lost star defensive end Nick Bosa (knee), defensive tackle Solomon Thomas (knee), quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (high-ankle sprain) and running backs Raheem Mostert (knee) and Tevin Coleman (knee) to injuries during their 31-13 victory against New York.

“@nfl fix this trash met life turf . 2020 is so wack,” 49ers defensive end Ark Armstead tweeted after the game from his verified account.

After the game, Shanahan said the initial fears were that Bosa and Thomas had torn anterior cruciate ligaments in their knees, which would likely require surgery and force them to miss the remainder of the season. Mostert’s injury, Shanahan said, didn’t appear to be as serious, but all players will have further evaluations Monday.
