Lights downtown were drones creating show
A mysterious light show over Maier Festival Park on Saturday night had Milwaukeeans wondering if it was a bird, a plane, or aliens coming to abduct us.
It turns out it was none of the above, but the aliens could still be coming; 2020 isn’t over yet.
The lights were more than 100 drones flying in formation making pictures of things like Santa’s sled and the Milwaukee Art Museum. The light show will be aired as a part of the Downtown Business Improvement District’s virtual holiday celebration.
The BID hadn’t released details of the light show, but officials did say this year’s show would feature an all-new finale that “Milwaukee will be talking about.”
The secret might have been leaked as dozens of people shared glimpses of the light show on social media, though Downtown BID CEO Beth Weirick didn’t say if there were other surprises yet to come.
“We are working on a special project to bring love, joy and happiness to Milwaukee in the spirit of our Annual Holiday Lights Festival,” she said in an email.
The annual holiday lights event is usually held at Pere Marquette Park but will be virtual this year due to COVID-19.
The Downtown BID announced the show would broadcast performances to get the community into the holiday spirit at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 19. Weirick said the drone show from Saturday night will be featured in the show that will air on WISN-TV (Channel 12).
The BID’s Twitter account responded to posts about the lights by encouraging people to tune into the holiday show.
