Washington QB Allen dislocates ankle
Washington Football Team quarterback Kyle Allen was carted off the playing surface of FedEx Field following a play in which New York Giants safety Jabrill Peppers wound up on the ground and whipped his right leg into Allen’s left ankle.
The injury occurred with 1:08 left in the second quarter and the Giants leading, 10-0. Peppers was flagged for an unnecessary roughness penalty.
It was announced after the game that Allen’s ankle is dislocated.
Backup Alex Smith, who suffered his own gruesome leg injury at FedEx Field in November 2018, replaced Allen at quarterback. It was Smith’s second appearance of the season.
“Obviously, a ton of emotions going on for me right there,” Smith said. “I see them with the air cast and the cart. I know that routine well.”
Smith threw for 325 yards and a touchdown, but also tossed three costly interceptions that contributed to Washington’s 23-20 loss to the Giants.
Carroll signs extension: Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has signed a multiyear contract extension that will keep him tied with the team well past his 70th birthday, according a person with knowledge of the deal.
ESPN first reported the agreement. Carroll is in his 15th NFL season as head coach and 11th in Seattle, where he’s led the Seahawks to eight playoff appearances including the Super Bowl championship in the 2013 season.
Carroll’s previous contract ran through the end of the 2021 season after being extended in 2018. Carroll’s new deal is expected to go through the 2025 season and was agreed to earlier this season.
The 69-year-old has a career regularseason record of 139-91-1 and is 150-91-1 including playoffs. He ranks 22nd on the NFL list in wins in both categories, and is three shy of matching Steve Owen, who has 153 wins, including playoffs.
The extension comes as the NFC West-leading Seahawks are off to a 6-1 start, and lead the NFL in averaging 34.2 points per outing.
Carroll took over in Seattle in 2010 after Jim Mora lasted just one season and following a 5-11 finish. Carroll is the Seahawks longest-tenured and winningest coach with a 106-60-1 record. Seattle has finished with a winning record in each of the past eight seasons.
Dolphins without five assistants: Five Miami Dolphins assistant coaches were not with the team during a 34-31 victory against Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
Due to COVID-19 protocols, the Dolphins (5-3) were without defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander, quarterbacks coach Robby Brown, outside linebackers coach Austin Clark, defensive line coach Marion Hobby and offensive quality control coach Kolby Smith.
On Friday, the organization announced an assistant coach had tested positive for the virus. It was the team’s first positive since training camp. Miami has not reported any player or additional positives since.
“I feel good about how we handled the situation,” Dolphins coach Brian Flores told reporters. “We wouldn’t fly if we felt like there was any situation where we would create some sort of outbreak.
“Look, it’s 2020. Things are ever changing. We’ve just got to be able to adapt.”
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, made his second career start for the Dolphins on Sunday, making Brown’s absence something to follow.
Stafford leaves game: Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who didn’t practice all week due to coronavirus exposure protocols, left the game in the fourth quarter of Detroit’s 34-20 loss to Minnesota for concussion evaluation after taking a knee to the head during a sack. He was picked off on consecutive possessions in the third quarter, first at the Minnesota 12 and in the end zone.
Chase Daniel threw another interception after taking over.
Mayfield put on COVID-19 list: The Cleveland Browns placed quarterback Baker Mayfield on the reserve/COVID-19 list Sunday.
Mayfield went on the list because he is considered a close contact of a staff member who tested positive for the virus Saturday.
The Browns did not disclose the identity of the staff member, but a person familiar with the situation said it’s not a coach who tested positive.
The Browns were on a bye Sunday. They face Houston next week.
