Movies: ‘The Midnight Sky,’ ‘I’m Your Woman,’ more
Another week, another batch of Oscar contenders making their way to the Milwaukee theaters that are still open during the pandemic.
Here’s what’s new in theaters this week. Check theater websites for tickets and showtimes.
Reminder: Nine Milwaukee-area theaters remain closed: the Oriental Theatre, the Times and Rosebud cinemas, Fox-Bay Cinema Grill and Marcus Theatres’ Hillside, Menomonee Falls, Saukville, Showtime and Southgate cinemas. The ones that reopened have instituted safety protocols including lower seating capacity and staggered
screening times.
‘The Midnight Sky’
Short version: George Clooney plays a lone scientist in the Arctic with a new mission: Get a message to a crew of astronauts to stop them from coming home, where a disaster has befallen humanity. Clooney also directed and coproduced this drama, and is getting Oscar buzz for all of those roles; Felicity Jones, Kyle Chandler and David Oyelowo are among the space crew overhead. After a brief run in theaters, the movie’s headed for Netflix Dec. 23.
Where you can see it: Marcus Theatres’ Bistroplex Southridge, Majestic, North Shore, Ridge, South Shore cinemas.
‘I’m Your Woman’
Short version: A woman and her baby go on the run after her husband betrays his partners in this 1970s-set crime drama. Rachel Brosnahan, who was born in Milwaukee but grew up in Chicago, is getting some awards-season buzz for her performance as the woman on the run in this thriller directed and co-written by Julia Hart (“Fast Color”). The movie also debuts on Amazon Prime Friday.
Critics’ reaction: So far, reviews have been positive, especially for Brosnahan’s performance, a departure from her popular role as the title comic in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” “With its
stretches of little or no dialogue, the film gives Brosnahan’s fans a chance to see her in a far more internalized, watchful mode than on her Amazon series, and there isn’t a performance here that hits a wrong note,” Sheri Linden wrote in her review for The Hollywood Reporter.
Where you can see it: Landmark Downer Theatre.
‘The Never List’
Short version: After her best friend (Brenna D’Amico) dies in an accident, an overachieving teenager (Fivel Stewart) sets out to complete a list of dangerous (and even illegal) challenges they had put together.
Where you can see it: Marcus Theatres’ Majestic, Ridge, South Shore cinemas.
‘A Christmas Carol’
Short version: Charles Dickens’ holiday tale is told via a balletic, computer animation/live-action hybrid. The voice cast includes Andy Serkis, Leslie Caron, Daniel Kaluuya, Sian Phillips, Martin Freeman and Carey Mulligan.
Critics’ reaction: Early reviews are mixed. The Hollywood Reporter’s Stephen Dalton called it “beautifully crafted but a mostly mechanical, lifeless experience.”
Where you can see it:
Tavern Brookfield Square.
