Washington QB Smith suffers right leg injury

-

Washington quarterback Alex Smith suffered a right leg injury against San Francisco on Sunday and missed the second half.

Washington won, 23-15, despite losing Smith because of problems with his surgically repaired right leg, which he broke in two places in November 2018. The injury sidelined him for nearly two calendar years.

The 36-year-old Smith was 8 for 19 for 57 yards and an interception in the first half. He walked to the locker room in the final minute of the second quarter.

Dwayne Haskins started the second half. Smith was wearing a mask and holding his helmet while pacing along the sideline.

Bengals QB hurt: As if their luck couldn't get any worse this season, the Cincinnati Bengals might be down another quarterback.

Brandon Allen, the former practice squad quarterback who took over when Joe Burrow was lost for the season to a knee injury, limped off the field with a problem with his right knee late in the 30-7 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Allen, who hadn't played in an NFL game in a year, has looked progressively better in the three games he's started, but the Bengals (2-10-1) have lost them all.

Ryan Finley, the other backup, relieved Allen against the Cowboys. He was sacked on two of the first three plays and couldn't move the chains. If Allen is unable to go on Dec. 21 against the Steelers – in prime time, no less – it will likely be Finley called on to face one of the league's best defenses.

After the game, Allen said he thinks the injury is a bruise but couldn't predict if he'd be ready for the Pittsburgh game.

“I tried to stay out there and walk it off,” he said.

The Bengals have journeyman Kevin Hogan on the practice squad, and it stands to reason that he could get a chance, too, if Allen is sidelined.

Henry sets record: Tennessee running back Derrick Henry has grabbed a piece of NFL history all to himself.

The NFL rushing leader posted his fourth career game running for at least 200 yards and two touchdowns Sunday for the Titans.

That's the most such games in NFL history, breaking a tie with Jim Brown, Barry Sanders and LaDainian Tomlinson.

Henry ran 26 times for 215 yards and two TDs in Jacksonville, also posting his ninth straight road game with at least 100 yards.

Minshew may get the nod: Gardner Minshew was back on the field for the first time in nearly two months Sunday and seemingly did enough to reclaim Jacksonville's starting quarterback job.

But he will have to wait along with everyone else for coach Doug Marrone to make a decision on the team's most volatile position.

Minshew threw for 178 yards and a touchdown in a 31-10 loss to Tennessee, most of it against a prevent defense, and looked to be the Jaguars' best option to win games down the stretch. Marrone, though, declined to name a starter moving forward.

“I haven't spoken to both guys so just out of respect for them,” Marrone said following the team's 12th consecutive loss, one shy of tying the franchise record. “Obviously, I have in my mind what I want to do. But I'm actually going to make sure I speak to them first before I do something through the media.”

Jacksonville plays at Baltimore next Sunday.

Marrone benched Mike Glennon following his fourth turnover (plus a safety) in six quarters and turned to Minshew for the first time since Week 7. Minshew missed several weeks with a right thumb injury, but even after being deemed fully healthy, he remained on the bench behind Glennon.
