Mitchell Airport unveils trafficking campaign
Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport travelers may notice new signage throughout the airport asking the public to assist in spotting signs of human trafficking.
Digital signs are displayed throughout the public areas of the terminal, as well as in airport restroom stalls. Messages encourage people to “Spot the signs” and remind travelers that human trafficking can occur anywhere.
“Oftentimes victims are separated from the trafficker when they need to use the restroom,” said Harold Mester, director of public affairs and marketing for Mitchell. “It’s a way to communicate with [victims] and share information on how they can get help.”
The campaign is part of a nationwide effort called Blue Lightning Initiative by the departments of Transportation, Homeland Security, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Airport employees were trained to spot human trafficking and report suspicious activity.
“Anyone who is a victim can speak with any employee of the airport, regardless of who that individual works for,” Mester said.
“MKE is committed to stopping human trafficking by educating our employees and alerting passengers on what to look for,” said Brian Dranzik, airport director.
The Department of Homeland Security released tips on identifying victims of human trafficking, including noticing if a person seems disoriented or confused or if they seem to be coached on what to say.
Traffickers’ use of Wisconsin’s largest airport plays a major role in human trafficking in the area and that affects people of color at a higher rate, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley said.
It’s unclear how many human trafficking incidents are connected to the airport. The Milwaukee County Sheriff ’s Office said it had no data to share.
