Lamenting Sports Show decision
Just say it isn’t so! After 80 years, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Sports Show has been canceled due to a lack of venue (“2021 Sports Show is a no-go after 80 years,” Feb. 13)?
As a retired nurse, I understand the need to have space for overflow of COVID-19 patients. Really, I do! But I think we need to look at the cost-benefit analysis of how many patients are currently using or have used the State Fair location due to lack of designated COVID-19 beds in other facilities in the year since the pandemic began.
That figure then needs to be put in comparison to the loss associated with this year’s cancellation of “the state’s longest running and largest traditional gathering of fishing, hunting and boating products, travel destinations and entertainment.”
Staffing beds that are unused for the possibility of overfill is a costly process. Health care staff, equipment, transportation, and so forth, exacts a high toll. I follow the COVID-19 statistics on a daily basis. The numbers are falling. Is this the time to go out on a limb and decide the West Allis overflow site is ready to be “mothballed?”
If that key decision was made promptly, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Sports show could go on as planned. After an excruciating COVID-19 year, I need to see some light at the tunnel’s end. What a better remedy for the blues than a splashing fish, the call of a loon or the reverberation of a well-oiled boat motor!
