486,000 Wisconsinites receive both doses of COVID-19 vaccine; state reports 464 cases
About 8.3% of Wisconsin’s population have had both shots of a COVID-19 vaccine, state health officials reported Sunday.
Last week, about 224,000 doses were administered to residents in the state, adding up to nearly 1.4 million shots given since December, according to the state Department of Health Services. Of people 65 and older, almost 54% have received at least one dose. About 224,300, or 22.1%, of residents 65 or older have received both shots.
In total, more than 901,000 Wisconsinites ages 16 or older have received at least one shot of vaccine as of Sunday. That’s 15.5% of the state’s population, DHS reported.
More groups of people will become eligible for a vaccine on Monday. According to DHS, those groups will be eligible in the following order:
• Education and child care staff h People enrolled in Medicaid longterm care programs, such as IRIS and Family Care
•Public-facing essential workers, such as 911 operators, public transit workers, utility workers and food supply chain workers, including agricultural workers and retail food workers
• Non-frontline essential health care personnel
• Facility staff and residents in congregate living settings, such as mental health institutions and prisons and jails
Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine became the third vaccine authorized for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Saturday.
The J&J vaccine differs from the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines because it only requires one shot.
It was shown to be 72% effective in the United States and less effective in South Africa and Latin America, while both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines were shown to be more than 94% effective, according to USA TODAY. But all three vaccines have been proven to prevent many serious cases of the virus. • New cases reported: 464 • New deaths reported: 0
