NOMINEES FOR THE MILWAUKEE HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS AWARDS BOYS SWIMMER AND DIVING ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

The Milwaukee High School Sports Awards will return for its fifth year. The show will be a virtual event broadcast July 8.

As part of the show we’ll honor the area’s best performers in each sport sponsored by the Wisconsin Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n.

Here are the nominees for area swimmer of the year:

Matt Dedering, soph., Cedarburg: The North Shore Conference swimmer of the year led the Bulldogs to the WIAA Division 2 title by winning the 50- and 100-yard freestyles in 20.80 and 45.82 seconds, times that both rank fifth all-time for the D2 state meet. He also anchored the team’s first-place 400free relay.

Isaac Fleig, soph., Cedarburg: Another key big-time performer for the D2 state champions, Fleig took the 200 individual medley in 1 minute 52.63 seconds and defended his 500-free title by posting a winning time of 4:34.69 seconds, the eighth-fastest all-time in the division. He was also part of two winning relays, the 200 medley and 400 freestyle.

Leo Gandaria, sr., Greenfield Co-op: A member of the Hawks’ All-American 400 freestyle relay, Gandaria also received All-American considerat­ion for his fourth-place finish in the Division 1 100 freestyle (45.49). He also finished second in the 200 free in 1:40.96. Lance Johnson, soph., Arrowhead: A four-time medalist at state, Johnson took third in in Division 1 in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststro­ke and was part of a third-place finish in the the 200 medley relay and a sixthplace finish 200 freestyle relay.

Jan Lanser, jr., West Bend East/West: Lanser, who attends East, won the Division 1 diving crown, finishing with a score of 562.05 to flirt with the state record of 563.45 by Racine Park’s Andrew Suchla in 2013.

Michael Long, jr., Brookfield Central/ East: A student at Central, Long earned All-American considerat­ion in the 100 backstroke in Division 1 after winning the event in 49.89. He also took third in the 200 free in 1:42.11.

Jack Lustig, sr., Greenfield Co-op: In addition to helping the 400 freestyle win a Division 1 state title with an AllAmerica­n time of 3:04.39, Lustig, who attends Pius XI, won the 200 individual medley (1:50.63) and took the 500 free crown in 4:30.22, the fifth fastest time for the Division 1 state meet. He earned All-American considerat­ion in both events.

Ben Meulemans, sr., Wauwatosa East/ West: A student at East, Meulemans earned All-American status thanks to his second-place finish in the Division 1 100 freestyle (44.83) and received AllAmerica­n considerat­ion with his fourthplac­e showing in the 50 free (20.65). Cory Michalek, sr., Waukesha North Co-op: The Kettle Moraine senior finished fifth in the D1 50 freestyle and third in the 100 free, earning All-American considerat­ion in both races. He also anchored the 200 medley relay to victory in 1:32.50, a time that was good enough for All-American status.

Owen Miller, sr., Marquette: He won the 100 breaststro­ke title in 55.97, the 10th-fastest time ever at the Division 1 meet and a time that gave him AllAmerica­n considerat­ion in the event. Emilio Perez, sr., Greenfield Co-op: The Hawks standout earned All-American status in 50 free (19.81), 100 fly (47.72) and 400 freestyle relay (3:04.39), setting Division 1 state records in the process.

Jack Sullivan, fr., Nicolet: The Division 2 200-freestyle champion posted the sixth-fastest time at the state meet (1:40.94) and took third in the 100 backstroke.
