Police: A Milwaukee man arrested after standoff
A 32-year-old Milwaukee man has been arrested in connection with a domestic violence situation that police say involved holding a woman hostage for several hours on Monday in a residence near the 7600 block of North 78th Street.
Officers responded to the scene at about 4 a.m. for a report of a shooting, according to police call logs.
The caller reported hearing gunshots and children yelling, police said during a news conference Monday.
Upon arrival, officers heard gunshots. Two children were able to exit the residence safely.
Police asked the public to avoid the area, and roads nearby were closed. Some residents from an apartment complex were evacuated.
A tactical team and a crisis negotiation unit were on-site. After several hours of trying to negotiate “a peaceful resolution,” the suspect fired a shot, police said during the briefing.
Then officers from the tactical enforcement unit entered the residence where they were met with gunfire from the suspect.
Officers did not return fire, police said, and they were able to retrieve the victim, a 30-year-old woman, from the home and to arrest the suspect.
No one sustained injuries from the suspect’s gunfire, police said.
The woman sustained non-life threatening injuries. She was treated on-site by the Milwaukee Fire Department.
The investigation is ongoing. Criminal charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the coming days, police said.
