Arrest made in deadly shooting

- Elliot Hughes

An arrest has been made in connection with the May 31 fatal shooting at Johnsons Park on Milwaukee’s northwest side, the Milwaukee County Sheriff ’s Office announced Thursday.

Officials did not share any identifying information about the suspect but said he has been booked into Milwaukee County Jail on tentative charges of first-degree intentional homicide, theft, possession of a firearm by a felon and manufacturing or delivering cocaine.

David D. Hughes, 29, of Milwaukee was shot and killed in the park on a day when four homicides were reported in the city. His mother, Dwilette Archer, said Hughes had been playing with several kids before the shooting.

“He didn’t deserve to be killed like that,” Archer said. “He was a person that cared a lot for his family.”

Archer said Hughes is a father of two boys, ages 8 and 6. He partnered with other family members in running a lawn care service and would also rent out inflatable bounce houses for kids.

“I just don’t know how I’m going to proceed without him,” Archer said. “He will be truly missed and it’s a big loss for the family.”

As of Wednesday, the Milwaukee Police Department reported 71 homicides in the city for the year, compared to 70 on the same date one year ago.

Officials haven’t released details of what led to the shooting. But in a statement Thursday, Sheriff Earnell Lucas described it as “cold-blooded.”

He said an arrest was made with the help of the U.S. Marshals Service and the Greenfield Police Department.
