Brewers sign draft picks Frelick, Black and Binelas

The Milwaukee Brewers announced the signings Tuesday of three of their top four selections in the 2021 Major League Baseball draft, outfielder Sal Frelick (first round), second baseman Tyler Black (Competitiv­e Balance Round A) and third baseman Alex Binelas (third round), a native of Oak Creek.

The signings were announced by vice president of domestic scouting Tod Johnson.

Frelick, 21, hit .359 with six home runs and 27 runs batted in in 48 games as a junior at Boston College, earning all-ACC first team and ACC defensive player of the year honors. He was named to the Baseball America AllAmerica third team and was a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award.

MLB.com reported Frelick was given a signing bonus of $4 million, above the assigned slot value of $3,885,800 for the 15th overall pick.

Black, 20, batted .383 with 13 homers and 59 RBI in 48 games during his sophomore season at Wright State University. The native of Toronto was named All-Horizon League first team and a third-team All-American by Perfect Game, ABCA/Rawlings and D1Baseball.com after leading the Raiders to the NCAA tournament.

MLB.com reported Black signed for the full slot value at No. 33 overall of $2,202,200.

Binelas, 21, batted .256 with 19 homers and 63 RBI in 50 games during his redshirt sophomore season at the University of Louisville in 2021, earning third team All-ACC honors. In 2020, Binelas started the first two games of the season before exiting the second game with a hand injury and missed the remaining 15 games before the season was halted.

In 2019, Binelas hit .291 with 14 homers and 59 RBI in 59 games, becoming the first Louisville freshman since Chris Dominguez in 2007 to hit 10 homers in a season. He lettered four seasons at Oak Creek High School.

MLB.com reported that Binelas signed for $700,000 just above the slot value of $699,700.
