INSIDE THE HUDDLE
Chase Wolf enters camp as the No. 2 quarterback. He played in three games last season but his most valuable work came against Minnesota and in the bowl game against Wake Forest.
Wolf replaced Graham Mertz in the third quarter against the Gophers after Mertz was knocked out at the end of a 7-yard run to the Minnesota 4. With UW trailing, 10-7, Wolf came on and hit wide receiver Jack Dunn for a touchdown to help UW take a 14-10 lead.
“I think I learned just to stay ready at all times,” Wolf said. “Anything can happen, like especially a crucial time in the game like in the red zone.”
Wolf did make a mistake late in regulation in a tie game when he had Chimere Dike open near the Minnesota 20 but instead threw deep to Devin Chandler. The ball was underthrown and intercepted in the end zone.
He made a similar mistake while running the two-minute drill at the end of the first half in the bowl game.
Wolf ran twice for a total of 12 yards and then hit consecutive passes for a total of 14 yards to move the ball to the UW 47. He had Garrett Groshek on a check-down on the next play but instead threw down the field into double coverage and the pass was intercepted.
“I think on that one it wasn’t about trusting my ability,” he said. “I wanted to make a big play. It was not needed in that situation. If I hit the check-down it was going to be first down.”
Daniel Wright, a walk-on from Iowa who was the No. 4 quarterback in the spring, announced recently he was entering the transfer portal.
